Variegated Chinese Privet - Plants

Variegated Privet is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub that is 6-10' tall and wide. It's creamy white and green leaves make for an excellent accent plant or hedge. The best foliage will appear when planted in full sun. This plant flowers in the late spring and it's malodorous flowers are offensive to many people. It is very vigorous and grows quickly to form a dense thicket.  It is pollution and alkaline tolerant, somewhat shade tolerant, and tolerant of poor soils.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Whiteflies, Japanese and ligustrum weevils, white peach scale, and privet rust mites are common insect problems.  Anthracnose, twig blight, cankers, powdery mildew, root rot are common disease problems.  Susceptible to copper deficiency.  It can be weedy in disturbed areas has escaped and naturalized in moist areas. The leaves and berries of privet can cause problems for dogs if eaten. 

  1. Light: Place the plant in a location that receives sunny or lightly-shaded . Avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves.
  2. Watering: Water the plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot.
  3. Soil: Use well-draining potting soil that retains some moisture but doesn't become waterlogged. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and organic matter works well.
  4. Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
  5. Pruning: Prune the plant in early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches.
