First Love - Yellow Penda Plant

Xanthostemon Chrysanthus, commonly named Yellow Penda, also popularly known as First Love, is a spectacular golden flowering rain-forest tree.

First Love ‘Yellow’, is still quite unknown outside its native country, and is pretty hard to find. This is a very desirable garden plant for warmer climates. The glorious, dense flower heads are well displayed at branches ends and are bright yellow with stunningly extended stamens reminiscent of a Bottlebrush. Flowers are sweetly fragrant and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Bloom time in Northern hemisphere lasts from winter through early spring, which makes it especially valuable. In sub-tropical and tropical areas it flowers reliably and often within 2-3 years from seed.

The foliage is attractive when the tree is not flowering, with the leaves being large and glossy. The best is in sunny spot and well drained and moist soils. It can be pruned to shrub size if desired. New leaves start out red, contrasting beautifully with older and lance shaped glossy green foliage.

The stamens are the principal feature of the flowers, similar to its relatives, the eucalypts, bottlebrushes. Flowering occurs in summer and autumn.

  1. Lighting: First Love Yellow Penda plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. Provide them with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. If you are growing them indoors, place them in a location that receives bright, indirect light.
  2. Watering: Regular watering is essential for First Love Yellow Penda plants, especially during the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and allow the top inch of soil to dry before the next watering.
  3. Soil: Plant your First Love Yellow Penda in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A mixture of loam, sand, and peat moss works well. Ensure the soil retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.
  4. Fertilization: Feed your First Love Yellow Penda every two to three months during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
  5. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for First Love Yellow Penda plants but can be done to maintain shape or remove dead or damaged branches. Prune after the blooming period to encourage healthy growth and flower production.
