Calophyllum Inophyllum (Alexandrian Laurel) - Plant

Calophyllum Inophyllum, commonly known as Alexandrian Laurel. It is a beautiful evergreen ornamental tree admired for its glossy, dark green leaves, attractive spreading canopy and fragrant white flowers with yellow centres. Native to tropical coastal regions of India, Southeast Asia, East Africa and the Pacific Islands, this tree belongs to the Calophyllaceae family. It is primarily an outdoor plant. Ideal for gardens, parks, roadsides, farmhouses and large landscape projects. Alexandrian Laurel is well known for its excellent tolerance to coastal winds, salty air and dry conditions once established.

Its sweet-scented flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while its round fruits produce valuable Tamanu oil, with its dense foliage, impressive growth and excellent shade-giving ability. This low-maintenance evergreen tree is a wonderful choice for tropical landscaping and large outdoor spaces.

Growing Requirements

Sunlight for Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant

Your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant thrives in full sunlight and requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth, dense foliage and better flowering. It can tolerate partial shade but grows best in bright outdoor locations.

Watering

Water your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant regularly during its early growth stage to keep the soil slightly moist. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant and requires moderate watering. Allow the topsoil to dry between waterings and avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing for Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant

Apply well-decomposed compost or organic manure around the base of your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant 2–3 times a year. During the growing season, use a balanced slow-release fertilizer to support healthy root development, lush foliage and overall growth. Avoid excessive fertilization.

Planting and Care

Container

Choose a large, sturdy container with sufficient drainage holes if growing your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant in a pot. Use a well-draining soil mix enriched with organic compost. As this tree develops a strong root system and grows large, planting it directly in the ground is recommended for long-term growth.

Pruning

Prune your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant occasionally to remove dead, damaged or overcrowded branches and maintain a neat, balanced canopy. Light pruning is best done after flowering or during the active growing season. Avoid heavy pruning, as it may affect the tree's natural shape and growth.

Propagation

Your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant is commonly propagated through fresh seeds collected from mature fruits. Remove the fruit pulp and sow the seeds in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the soil moderately moist and place the pot in a warm, bright location to encourage germination.

Repotting

Repot your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant when its roots outgrow the existing container, preferably during the active growing season. Choose a larger pot with proper drainage and fresh, well-draining soil mixed with organic compost. Handle the root ball carefully to minimize transplant shock. For long-term growth, planting it in the ground is recommended.

Common Pest

Your Calophyllum Inophyllum Plant may occasionally be affected by scale insects, mealybugs, aphids and leaf-eating caterpillars. Regularly inspect the leaves and young shoots for signs of infestation. Remove affected parts and apply neem oil or a mild insecticidal soap as needed. Ensure good air circulation to maintain healthy growth.
